Shipping to Dubai

When shipping to Dubai the following requirements must be carried out:

  • You must be a resident of the UAE and present the relevant documents to support this

  • Gain a clearance certificate
  • Pass a roadworthiness test
  • Register and insure the vehicle

For more information about exporting your vehicle to Dubai, please use the tabs to your left to learn the ins and outs of the process.

To import your vehicle to Dubai you must be a resident of the UAE and have a left-hand drive car to meet regulations. You will need to be a legal resident with a UAE visa and driving license.

You can import a car that is no less than 10 years old. If your car is older than 10 years old, it will need authorising with the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) first.

Import Documents Needed

You can import new or used cars according to the import requirements. The following documents need to be provided if the vehicles are brought to the country:

  • The invoice of your car to prove ownership and value
  • Certificate of Origin as proof of where the car was manufactured
  • The bill of lading
  • A passport copy
  • Residency visa copy
  • A written list of the imported goods
  • UAE driver’s license
  • Vehicle insurance certificate
  • Vehicle clearance certificate

Once your vehicle arrives in Dubai, your car will go through clearance where you will need to present your documents, including your passport copy. Pay your customs duties and you will receive a clearance certificate.

Customs Tax

Your imported vehicle will be checked and evaluated by customs inspectors and a customs tax of 5% will be imposed on the total assessed value of each car.

Goods For Personal Use

Items of personal use and used household items brought into the country will be exempted from customs tax and duties after being checked by the customs inspectors.

However, a 5% customs tax will be imposed on goods if found by the customs inspectors to be in commercial quantities.

Once you have paid your custom duty you can receive your clearance letter, which will cost 4,700 AED plus 700 AED for the inspection.

You will now need to register and insure your vehicle before you can legally drive it. There are a number of companies that insure imported vehicles and you’ll need to present your documents.

Once your vehicle arrives in Dubai, it will be tested in order for it to be insured and registered. This is similar to an MoT test, in which your vehicle is tested for safety and durability

This test includes checks on brakes, wheels, emissions, electrics, lights and body, so to pass this test, it is a good idea to prepare your car before shipping to Dubai by making sure all elements of your car are working smoothly and safely to ensure complete roadworthiness.

Register your car at the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) trusted test centres include Tasjeel, Al Shamil and Tamam, but you can find a full list here.

Once this is completed, you will receive new number plates and a registration card, and you can legally drive your car in Dubai.
